So, I am back with another book review after neglecting that segment of the blog for so long and I can promise you that my comeback is super amazing. Today’s post is centred around a book called #GirlBoss by Sophia Amoruso. You know the first time I came across the book, I wasn’t so enthusiastic about it and even left it to read other books for reasons I don’t know sha.
Welcome to my blog, If this is your first time here, I’m delighted to have you read this post. This post you are probably scanning through is one of the category on the blog where I share awesome life lessons from books I’ve read. Don’t stop at this post, you can take you scanning a little further by checking out other awesome contents on the blog.
#GIRLBOSS is written by Sophia Amoruso, the successful owner of popular brand Nasty Gal is an American retailer that specializes in fashion for young women. In this book, she takes us on the road she had to take to become the #GirlBoss that she is today. The main reason why she shared the story is to help us see how we can learn from other peoples story and also make us know that QUITTING is NEVER an OPTION. This book is also to encourage us to ask more questions and to know when to either follow the rules or re-write them. Most importantly for me, I see this book as a guide to becoming a boss from a woman’s perspective that is equally relevant in the man’s world. The twist to her story is the fact that she achieved all these without a college degree.
Without wasting more word counts, I bring to you 8 incredible lessons I got from this book. Please note that these are not the only lessons from the book but these are the ones that got to me personally.
You Are In Charge of Your Own Life
This for me is one of the profound lessons from this book. You own your life and you determine what happens in your life. If you want to be a boss or excel at whatever you do then you must be ready to take control of your life and accept full responsibility of all your actions and inactions; even the ones that you are not proud of. You must be ready to be a fighter at all times and by being a fighter I mean, consistently fight for what you believe in without feeling bad about it. You must be ready to question everything that you see, hear or read, abandon anything (this includes habits) and anyone about your life that might be holding you back from being who you want to be and learn to create your own opportunities because the truth is, sometimes opportunities don’t come knocking at your door.
You Are Unique
The earlier you realize and embrace your uniqueness the better for you. I know that in this generation, it’s quite difficult to embrace your uniqueness because no one wants to be the odd one out especially with all we see on social media but tell me where being someone else has ever paid off and I’d eat my words back. So my dear, Embrace your unique journey and don’t care about every other person that thinks that something is wrong with you because you are not following the bandwagon. Again, the journey of being a boss or a successful individual is always a lonely one.
Money In The Bank Is Better Than On Your Feet
I know for us ladies, this is easier said than done because who wants to turn an eye on a gorgeous looking shoes? Well, my dear, the sooner you realise that money in the bank and other investment platforms is a smart move the better for you. Save now and you’d have a lot of money to buy all the shoes in the world. Building an empire of any sort requires sacrifice and if forgoing shoes and other fashion accessories for a while is the sacrifice you have to make to become that #GirlBoss that you’ve always dreamt about so why not do it? Don’t get me wrong at all, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t look good all I’m saying is that you should be prudent in your spending and know when to draw the line between your wants and needs. If you learn to control your finances, you won’t find yourself stuck in jobs, places, or relationships that you hate just because you can’t afford to go elsewhere. I wrote a post about managing your finances
Not So Amazing Jobs Are For A Reason
This particular lesson got me real good because I’m at a point in my life where I feel like I’m overqualified for the job that I’m currently doing but after reading this book I got a change of mind. The truth is not everyone will get the job of their dreams right after leaving the university even with the best of grades and that doesn’t make you are inferior to those who landed “good-paying jobs”. We all have to start somewhere and that somewhere is where you are right now. You’ll appreciate your amazing career journey more when you look back at your not-so-amazing jobs and realize that you learned something from all of them.
You Have To Balance Work and Life
Figuring how to balance work and life is still something that I’m trying to get a hand on. Most of us have to deal with time-consuming 9-5 jobs which leaves us with no time at all for ourselves and loved ones. It is even more demanding for freelancers because you are tempted to work round the clock. Reading this book taught me that if you don’t build a structure for yourself, you feel like you always have to be working and it’s exhausting. It is not only exhausting, you’d also end up creating a wide gap between yourself and others that care about you. Make a schedule for yourself that incorporates time for phone calls to catch up with your family and friends, exercise, social media, and of course the work that’s giving you that capacity to maintain the lifestyle you so desire!
Being a boss is never a day’s journey and we must not be in the hurry to get to our destination because, in the end, the journey might be more important than the destination. You can also check a fellow blogger review of the book here.
