Cory Asbury Reckless Love
Song of the Week

SONG OF THE WEEK|| Reckless Love of God By Cory Asbury

Have you ever thought of the love of God? I don’t mean those random thoughts that pop into our mind as a result of the awesome feeling we get during worship sessions. I mean, have you ever thought about how God loves you unconditionally and how he deliberately makes effort to bring us closer to him constantly?

Cory Asbury Reckless Love of God

This morning, on my way to work, I turned on one of the newest songs I downloaded titled “Reckless love of God” by Cory Asbury just to shut my mind away from the traffic on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos Nigeria but something different happened to me as the lyrics of the song began to pop in my mind.  I began to think about why the songwriter would qualify God’s love as reckless.

Is God's love reckless?

To begin with, I had to quickly consult my dictionary to find out the meaning of “Reckless” and these are what I found as the synonyms of the word: thoughtless, careless, Impulsive and incautious. Armed with the meaning that the word reckless is a negative word, I began to ask myself why the songwriter will deliberately use it as an adjective to qualify God’s love. To satisfy my curiosity, I decided to run a background check on the writer of the song and luckily for me I found his interpretation of the song on his Facebook page. Here is an extract of his explanation of the song;

God is not reckless but the way he loves us is

God’s love is not crafy or slick, it is not cunny or shrewd

God doesn’t consider himself first, He is not selfish or self serving

He doesn’t consider what he would gain or lose from giving his love

His love leaves the ninety-nine to find the one every time

As humans, our love is conditional and constantly needs reciprocation to remain but God’s love is pure and borderless. He willingly gave up his only son to save mankind from eternal condemnation. As I continued to ponder on the lyrics of the song, It became clearer to me that the songwriter must have properly studied the Parable of the Prodigal son in the book of Luke 15: 4-7 a thousand and one times while x-raying God’s Love.

Overwhelming Love of God

Here is the Lyrics of the Song;

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me
You have been so, so good to me
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me
You have been so, so kind to me
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
I couldn’t earn it, and I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah
When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me
You have been so, so good to me
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me
You have been so, so kind to me
(Back to Oh this overwhelming)
There’s no shadow You won’t light up
Mountain You won’t climb up
Coming after me
There’s no wall You won’t kick down
Lie You won’t tear down
Coming after me
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God
Oh, it chases me down, fights ’til I’m found, leaves the ninety-nine
And I couldn’t earn it, I don’t deserve it, still, You give Yourself away
Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God, yeah
There is no shadow you won't light up
The take home from this song for me is the fact that no matter how far gone we are in the world, God is ever ready to chase after us and bring us back to him. He rejoices when we accept his love.
Do you think God’s love is reckless? What Personal experience do you have to justify this statement that God’s love is reckless?
