SONG OF THE WEEK|| Come To The Altar By Elevation Worship Mp3 Download

As I stepped out of the house this morning, I was greeted by the famous 3rd mainland Bridge traffic in Lagos Nigeria and this morning was unusually long but I was unperturbed because I was listening to a prearranged playlist of Soul lifting songs on my phone. As we made our way gradually down the bridge, my soul caught the lyrics of a song by Elevation Worship and my spirit man suddenly wanted to pay more attention to the Lyrics of the song and that meant putting the song on repeat. I was first hesitant because I know the lyrics of the song by heart but I had learnt to obey the Holy Spirit so I did just that. As I listened more attentively to the lyrics and resisted the urge to sing along as was my usual custom, the Holy Spirit began to draw my attention to some recurring words in the song which are very significant in terms of our salvation. These words are; “Altar“, “blood of Jesus” and “Forgiveness”

All through the Bible, we’d find that the altar is a very significant place and from my personal research I found out that as much an altar was a raised platform where people placed their sacrifice, it actually signifies more than that. To the children of Israelites, an altar was a place of approach, a place to call upon the name of the LORD and remember His glorious promises. If you were a good Sunday School Student, you’d also agree with me that God responded actively to altar activity. The contest between Elijah and the prophets of Baal involving an altar demonstrated an interaction between Yahweh and Baal. Noah built an altar and offered a sacrifice to Yahweh. Sacrificing the blood of the animal is something that also goes hand in hand with altar building. God at some point in the old testament instructed Moses to offer animals as a sacrifice and sprinkle the blood on the altar and the people as a seal of God’s covenant with the children of Israel.

Today, Christians no longer offer animal sacrifices involving blood, because God already sent his son to die for us and his blood was shed on the cross of Calvary to pay for our sins and also bring us into an everlasting covenant with the father. So this means that we can boldly come to God and surrender to him because his arms are always open wide to receive us.

The chorus is simple but packed with truth. When we sing, “O Come to the Altar,” it’s not literally saying people should build an altar and sacrifice an animal there. It’s simply referring to the type of sacrifice Paul mentions in Romans 12:1. For me, it calls us into a habit of laying down the ways of our old self at the altar so that we can embrace a new life in Christ. Another thing that strikes me is the fact that we are not even looking for God, He’s actually in the business of calling us out of our sins, regrets, mistakes and sorrow.

Are you hurting and broken within
Overwhelmed by the weight of your sin
Jesus is calling
Have you come to the end of yourself
Do you thirst for a drink from the well
Jesus is calling

O come to the altar
The Father’s arms are open wide
Forgiveness was bought with
The precious blood of Jesus Christ

Leave behind your regrets and mistakes
Come today there’s no reason to wait
Jesus is calling
Bring your sorrows and trade them for joy
From the ashes a new life is born
Jesus is calling

Oh what a Savior
Isn’t he wonderful
Sing alleluia, Christ is risen
Bow down before him
For he is Lord of all
Sing alleluia, Christ is risen

The fathers arm are open wide
