5 Goliaths that Must Fall in Your life

If you grew up in a christian home then the epic story of David and Goliath isn’t strange to you. As a young child this story fascinated me a lot that I kept on reading it every time I picked up “My book of Bible Stories”.

I tried to imagine how afraid the children of Israel were when Goliath who was about nine feet tall came out everyday for forty days to taunt and scorn the armies on the battle field. I also tried to picture Saul’s state of mind when he made that declaration to greatly reward any solider that took down Goliath. This must have been a trying time for them and they must all have been amused when David a Shepherd teenager stepped out to say he was ready to take down the giant without any armour or prior knowledge of war. Of course he eventually delivered the Israelites from Goliath and this act went down history forever.

The truth is, this story might seem like another Bible tale that has little or no significance in our modern life but the kind of fear the Israelites faced at that battlefield is something we’re all familiar with. There might be a sort of giant in your life at the moment that is harassing, insulting and taunting you. These giants have robbed you of your peace and freedom and you may even be feeling so immobilized at this point because of the effects of the giant.

The goodnews is that our Lord Jesus Christ has made a way for these giants to fall. Your freedom starts with believing that even though the giant you’re battling in your life might be as big or even bigger than Goliath, it can NEVER be bigger then JESUS.

Jesus came to the world, died and resurrected to overcome the enemy. At his resurrection, he sets you free from very giant who might rise up against you. But the truth is the enemy might still have power over your life if you misstep.

Today, I bring to you five giants that we must bring down as a believer so that we can enjoy all that God has for us.

Fear Must Fall

One thing is constant in this story; the Israelites were pretty afraid of the Philistines and most especially 9ft tall Goliath. So, fear kept them from doing anything about winning the battle. Even the king forgot that they served a God that had won battles for them in the past.

Like the Israelites, the giant FEAR might have dominated or demoralised you totally but its time to pull it down with a sling and a stone.

Fear diminishes God’s glory in your life, steals your confidence & sleep and also blinds you. It is a giant that is relentless and the only solution to bringing it down is the giant of FAITH. The only way faith is activated in your heart is through hearing and reading of God’s words.

Constant interaction with God’s word will build your faith until it becomes a stone that knocks out the giant that Jesus has already defeated. Fighting against fear is a progressive fight and it might get better but will not instantly go away. To win this battle, you just be honest about what is underneath your fear and transfer it into God’s hands.

Rejection Must Fall

Remember that David actually stumbled on Goliath threatening the children of Israelites while he was running errands. But he immediately got irritated that Goliath was taunting Gods people. He asked his brother for details but they immediately shut him up and were irritated by his inquisitiveness.

David could have just given up at this point because nobody really likes being shunned or rejected but he didn’t let that stop him. He went ahead to ask for the details he needed. If David had allowed that tiny seed of rejection to take root and wreak havoc in his heart, this story wouldn’t have been today.

In our everyday life, it is very easy to loose sight of all that God has promised you because of some seed of rejection that has been sowed in your life at a certain time. To experience Jesus’ victory over rejection, you must see yourself as God’s sees you and not what anybody has said.

You don’t have to live for acceptance because you’d be setting yourself up for disappointment. It is best to live FROM acceptance. From the acceptance that God loves you and he chose you even before you were conceived in your mother’s womb. You were made to be accepted and embraced buy your heavenly Father. Always remember that Jesus didn’t comer to the world to die to gain God’s acceptance but he did it because he got the Father’s acceptance.

Comfort Must Fall

We all love to be comfortable and may never accept that comfort might be a giant to fall in out lives. Honestly, nobody likes to live in a risky environment or with an empty back account. All of these situations aren’t back in themselves until the desire for safety and security becomes the sole purpose of your lives.

It is very possible to loose out on gods plan for your live because you settled for less than God’s plan for you. When you’re always willing to choose the easy route over following Jesus, you might be dealing with the giant of comfort. Don’t let comfort be the reason why you miss out of God’s plan for your life.

God wants you to see beyond comfort and recognize that there is something of eternal significance for you to contend against. Gaining victory over the giant of comfort means refusing to wait for all the pieces to line up before you make a move. It means being willing to go in a direction that doesn’t feel familiar at first.

Out faith thrives in discomfort. Every story in the Bible, points to the fact that living the supernatural means living in discomfort for a while. You luge on earth is short but God is so big so focus on eternal significance while you’re here.

Anger Must Fall

Anger according to the scripture isn’t such a bad thing as long as we adhere to the caveat that says that we should go to bed with the anger. One of the signs that indicates that the giant Anger must die in your life is if you feel angry about something that never happened but you think happened. Maybe you thought you friends stabbed your back when in fact they didn’t.

Other times, you might have a genuine reason to be angry but you have repressed such anger only to express it at the wrong People and at wrong times.

To gain victory over anger, you must recognize that lasting change isn’t instant. You are not going to wake up and all your anger issues will disappear. The key is to continually fill your heart with God’s words so you can substitute your anger with the truth of God’s words.

Replace the angry conversations you’re having in your mind with prayers for the people who have wronged you. Remind yourself that you’re not perfect. God forgave you even when you didn’t deserve forgiveness so you must be willing to forgive others. Always remember to let go of the mission of righting every righting in your life. Let God handle all the details.

Addiction Must Fall

Addiction is anything we think we can’t live without. Underneath every addiction, is a sense of not wanting to feel exposed and when you do, you have the tendency to want to cover up your weakness. Its important to note that addiction is a short term cover for your exposed heart that you don’t want the world to see.

No one likes to feel vulnerable and when you do, whatever is making you feel that way, you have the tendency to cover it up. Vulnerability is a key concept of addiction. The giant of addiction can rob you of God’s best for you. It can lead you down a never-ending path to a never-fulfilled promise. In the end, it will stand over you, ridiculing you and dimming the fame and glory of God in your life. So, how can you realize Jesus’ victory over this giant?

The only solution is to looks pass the symptoms and focus on the root cause. When David decided he wasn’t going to wear the armour that Saul offered him, he moved pass the feeling of being afraid to trusting God’s supernatural strength.

When your weakness whispers to you that you’re able remember that God is Screaming YOU ARE ABLE IN CHRIST. Every time you come in contact with a temptation that can lead you to addiction, you have a choice to either cover up or go to the CROSS.

You are free in Christ the instant you place your trust in him. But it may be that you need to call on those standing close by to help unravel the layers. Do whatever is necessary to weave your life into a system of openness, honesty, and accountability. Addiction shrinks at the sight of accountability.

At the end of the story of David and Goliath, we read, “So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him” (1 Samuel 17:50). In a matter of hours, a random teenage boy whose only experience was shepherding sheep went into a battle armed only with a sling and his faith in God took down a fearsome giant that had been taunting the Israelites for forty days.

Jesus can do the same for you. You just have to be honest about what giant you need to pull down and trust him to give you victory over them.

This post was coined out of the Video series Goliath must fall by Louie Giglio.
